Hello there, just wanted to point out that in the UK London isn't a city although it has two cities within it. Listening to James and Simon Kaye discussing constitutional changes to London, that weirdness of the British state (only a monarch can give city status) should have been acknowledged.
Anyway, living in Britain's largest city of Birmingham which is a monumental failure in local government (Radical Joe is spinning so fast at the moment), it never gets any love from the geeks despite it needing a major intervention. Yes we had the Bob Kerslake 'reforms' which were a rare failure in his career but they were timid and useless tbh.
I am also somewhat cynical about the reforms Labour is doing to local government despite the good intentions. Ultimately until the state gets to grips with statutory services like social care, local authorities will not be local government. Tinkering around the edges and not dealing with the democratic deficit in local government is going to lead to more problems rather than less.
Gawd bless Simon Kaye optimism though. We do need optimists
